It was truly a labor of love.
For drywall, you need to make sure the framing is sturdy enough to support the weight of the stones. If not, you will have to reinforce it with a backing board like Dura Rock or Hardi board or wire lathe and scratchcoat.
I attached the stones using mortar. Cover the entire back of the stone with mortar, let the excess squish out to cover the sides of the stone. You can then tool it out or use a sponge, the mortar needs to wrap around the back edge of the stone to lock it in place. I'll usually set a few stones at a time, then tool out the joints. If you do it every single rock it will take forever.
I am concerned the diameter of your stones is very small. It might help for me to see a picture. You can email it to me at john@artofwelcome.com.
I hope this helps. Keep me updated on your project!
My best,
John

Re: Interior fireplace – flagstone

Hi John,
What a beautiful work of art!!!!

I was thinking of doing something similar in my house. I have a multitude of flagstone (pinkish in color) left over after a neighbor had their pool area resurfaced (over ordered). Several of the pieces are 2 inches or so think but most of them are about 1/2 inch thick and no bigger than 6 inches in diameter. What steps did you do to prepare the site and to place the stone? I would like to do it without grout as well. Currently, the fireplace (which sits at the gound level, is surrounded by 12 inch white tile. The rest of the wall above the fireplace is painted drywall. I would like to have an inlay above the fireplace like you have done, but sadly, cannot have a drawer. For the larger pieces, I am making a walkway in the backyard.

Any help you can give me, I would REALLY Appreciate!!

Your fan in Arizona,
